When experiencing failure, not infrequently some people experience demotivation or loss of motivation. Not only failure, there are other conditions that seem simpler or trivial but can be a trigger for demotivation.
Prof. Euis Sunarti, Professor of Family Resilience at IPB University, said that there are many factors that cause demotivation, the level of depth also varies. Everyone can experience demotivation, with diversity over time, as well as diversity in the ability to rise back to motivate and do activities.
"Sometimes we can understand that demotivation in someone occurs as a result of often being let down, especially if the person feels that their performance is actually not bad, and feels that they have tried hard. Understand yes, but still don't justify," she said in a brief interview.
But it turns out that, continued Prof. Euis, demotivation can also occur for reasons that seem "trivial". For example, being reprimanded for reasons that are quite plain, and aimed at educating. This case often occurs among students who are writing a thesis and should not be an excuse. This kind of trivial reason seems to be understood.
This IPB University lecturer from the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences - Faculty of Human Ecology (IKK-Fema) said that the main factor causing demotivation is the absence of values and strong life goals. Therefore, the ability to rise after demotivation is also diverse, according to a strong will and purpose in life.
"How much the person has the sturdiness and value of life itself and the self-benefit is very high, then they can rise up even though they has experienced demotivation," she said.
According to Prof. Euis, if it occurs for a long time, demotivation can interfere with achievement and development in life. The self becomes unproductive, work that can be completed in a short time, finally completed in a longer time. At the same time there is a loss of time, energy, and thought.
"It may even miss the golden opportunity that can be obtained. It should be emphasized that the impact is not only self-defeating but a consequence on the support system and the happiness of those around him," she added.
Demotivation is also closely related to mental health issues. Especially when accompanied by significant mood changes and accompanied by prolonged worry and anxiety. This may be a trigger for depression. If accompanied by sleep patterns, poor eating and activity can lead to mental disorders so that it needs treatment.
She gave some tips in case of demotivation. The first strengthens the value of life, intentions and goals in living life. "For example, goals such as wanting a bright future, educating yourself to have resilience, or making parents happy. With a clear goal, we can face significant difficulties, so it is not easy to experience demotivation," she added.
Second, build a good and positive environment. By being in the environment, there will be found and felt an attitude of mutual support and motivation. Mainly from the closest environment, namely family.
"A positive environment like this needs to be built, not necessarily just obtained. This means contributing to the environment, by cultivating positive things so that it will be far from being demotivated," she continued.
Prof. Euis said, if you don't have a supportive family environment, it's good to have a role model who provides positive values. If there is no real world, role models can also be obtained from the virtual world which can provide insights to be able to rise from the slump. (MW/Rz)
