IPB University Researchers Develop Inventpro® for Fast and Cheap PCR Tests
A number of IPB University researchers have succeeded in developing the inventpro® Reverse Transcriptase (RT) enzyme for molecular purposes. The IPB University researchers consisted of Dr. Joko Pamungkas, IPB University lecturer from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Uus Saepuloh and Dr. Diah Iskandriati, both of whom are researchers at the Primate Animal Study Center - Institute of Research and Community Service (PASC-IoRC) IPB University, cooperates with business partner PT Biomedical Technology Indonesia (PT BMTI).
Dr. Joko Pamungkas explained, the RT inventpro enzyme is a useful product for synthesizing deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) strands from ribonucleic acid (RNA). In bio-molecular technology, this process is very important in its application in various techniques, one of which is the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique which principally utilizes the process of doubling the amount of DNA so that sufficient quantities can be detected. This PCR technique cannot duplicate RNA, so RT enzymes are needed to convert it into DNA.
This enzyme product is produced from synthetic gene material with modifications to some of its amino acids and is produced using the Escherichia coli expression system. "The sensitivity has been tested in various virus detection tests, including specifically tested for the detection of SARS CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. When we compare side-by-side inspections with premium quality commercial products, the results are very good,” he said.
Based on the research that has been done, the storage period at the recommended temperature has been tested and proven to maintain its function in complementary DNA synthesis. At this temperature, the enzymes are well preserved for a minimum of two years.
Because the production is done domestically, it is easy to obtain at a more affordable price. This product is also relied on for its superiority as a booster for TKDN alias Domestic Component Level for other domestic products that use it.
"The availability of this enzyme will increase knowledge in the field of molecular biology, because together with other enzymes, it allows scientists to perform cloning techniques as well as RNA sequencing and characterization,"he explained
Currently, the availability of RT enzymes is fully supplied by foreign commercial industries. Thus, all research activities and the use of RT enzymes in Indonesia are highly dependent on the import of this reagent. This situation is unfavorable and makes dependence on RT enzymes completely from abroad. (SMH) (IAAS/DR)
