Here's What Expert from IPB University Said About How Expensive Cooking Oil Are

COVID-19 pandemic affects every sector, including the price of cooking oil in Indonesia that experienced a price spike. Seeing this phenomenon, Prof Nuri Andarwulan, a lecturer from the Department of Food Science and Technology of IPB University as well as a senior researcher in Center for South East Asia Food Agricultural Science and Technology (SEAFAST Center) IPB University, said that world vegetable oil stock is decreasing because of the pandemic. Not only that, problems in logistics and transportation make the production and supply in the market decrease.

"Palm oil was exported to fulfill the global demand with a higher price, affecting domestic supply and price. Indonesia's palm oil export markets are China, India, Pakistan, and Europe," Prof Nuri said.

Then, the government set a price ceiling (HET) in response to the price spike for palm oil. The price ceiling adjustment and market operation are also needed considering the changing global market.

Prof Nuri added that there are multiple ways to cook, not only frying. A household can process their food using other techniques.

"The most affected one by palm oil price is Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM) for fried products, and also Indonesians habit to eat fried foods," Prof Nuri stated. (*/RA)(IAAS/EAZ)
