Description:

Rainbow chili is a chili tree which in one tree has a different color of fruit, so it looks beautiful in color. This chili is very suitable to be an ornamental plant. In addition to be an ornamental plant, rainbow chili can also be consumed with spiciness level above other chili products.

The Division of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture of IPB University since 2003 has produced many chili varieties. Up to now, it has been released and registered in the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia as many as 23 varieties of large chili, semi-chili pepper, curly chili and ornamental chili and tomatoes.

Especially for ornamental chili, there are seven varieties, namely Syakira chili, Lembayung chili, Jelita chili, Namira chili, Ayesa chili, Ungara chili and Seroja chili. Each chili has different characteristics but derived from one species namely the Capsicum Annuum which is commonly consumed in Indonesia.

Syakira Chili has the characteristics of an early yellow fruit and green and finally red. Jelita Chili, the tree is lusher and shorter and has a color degradation like Syakira chili.

Namira Chili can be seen from the fruit that piles up on the stem, in contrast to another chili. Ayesa chili has fruits that tend to be round and purple. Whereas the Lembayung chili and Ungara chili have the shape of slightly rounded and thick with purple color (containing anthocyanin). Seroja chili has 8 different fruit colors and its level of spiciness is quite high.

For this ornamental chili variety has a spiciness level of around 1000 ppm. Far different from chili in general, which is only 200 ppm. The spiciest is Ungara chili, can be up to 1600 ppm.

For its own treatment, chili is not as difficult as caring for ordinary chili plants. This plant can be planted at room temperature and does not require direct sunlight. This is different from other chili which mostly have to be planted in an open room.

Rainbow chili is easier to plant. We can use planting media that is added to abemix (splashed 2 times a week). The fruit can be harvested between three and six months later. Currently, rainbow chili seeds have been marketed throughout Indonesia.

Thanks to his innovation in the field of horticulture, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Syukur won the Indonesian Breeding and Breeding Society (MPPI) Award in the Plant Breeding category on May 7, 2017. Previously, Prof. Syukur also won several awards, including the Extraordinary Intellectual Property Award (AKIL) from the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2012, Indonesia’s Most Prospective Innovation 2016 by the Business Innovation Center, Republic of Indonesia Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education.
