The increased flow of homecoming for Eid each year significantly impacts the environment, particularly in terms of air pollution.

Prof Hefni Effendi, an expert in Environmental Management and Pollution at IPB University recommends that the public opt for public transportation to mitigate negative impacts, especially regarding air pollution.

According to him, the use of  private vehicles during the homecoming season will lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions due to the burning of fossil fuels.

“With the rise in the use of personal cars and motorcycles, along with increased frequency of trains, buses, and flights, greenhouse gas emissions and the carbon footprint of transportation will rise,” he stated.

Additionally, the habit of throw away packaging during the homecoming journey contributes to increased solid waste. Therefore, Prof Hefni emphasizes the importance of using reusable packaging to reduce the waste generated.

Prof Hefni said, the increase in the number of private vehicles during homecoming is expected to elevate air and noise pollution. Consequently, he encourages the public to consider mass public transport as a more environmentally friendly alternative.

On the other hand, he hopes that the government can enhance mass transportation facilities that are timely, safe, comfortable, and have multiple destinations. “This provision can be encouraged through incentives for mass transportation providers, both state-owned enterprises and private companies,” Prof Hefni said.

“We should appreciate the government’s efforts to open up opportunities for WFH (Work From Home) and WFA (Work From Anywhere) for employees well before Eid to anticipate the surge in transport congestion, while also helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” he added.

In facing the surge of homecoming travelers, the use of mass public transport is considered the best option. However, for those who still choose to use private vehicles, he advises making use of the long holiday period to avoid simultaneous travel, which can reduce the accumulation of air pollution, noise, and waste.
