IPB University Faculty of Medicine Lecturer Reveals the Impact of Dehydration During Fasting on Skin Health

During fasting, individuals refrain from consuming food and drinks for several hours. IPB University Faculty of Medicine lecturer, dr Rachmah Diana Putri, SpDVE, MKes, FINSDV, FAADV, states that this can affect skin vitality, which tends to decline due to dehydration.
Dry skin resulting from dehydration can become red, itchy, and painful, especially in cold temperatures. If left untreated, this condition can lead to irritation that is difficult to avoid.
According to her, dry skin feels tight, appears wrinkled, dull, rough, and can sometimes be itchy. In more severe cases, dry skin may be accompanied by redness, signs of inflammation, and even peeling.
Fluid deficiency during fasting can lead to skin issues, including dryness and dullness. In more detail, dr Rachmah shares several skin problems caused by dehydration that should be monitored.
Skin Problems Due to Fluid Deficiency During Fasting
1. Dry Skin
dr Rachmah explains, that a lack of fluids during fasting can cause the skin to lose its moisture. Activities performed while fasting also lead to sweating and urination, further exacerbating skin dehydration.
2. Dull skin and buildup of dead skin cells
“Dehydration hampers blood circulation, reducing the blood volume delivered to the skin. As a result, the skin appears dull and pale and is more susceptible to premature aging,” dr Rachmah notes.
She adds that dry skin is also more prone to the accumulation of dead skin cells, hindering skin regeneration.
3. Tired-Looking Face
dr Rachmah explains that a lack of fluids and nutrients such as vitamins and minerals can diminish skin health and beauty. Coupled with insufficient sleep at night, the face may appear more haggard and tired.
“This condition can be worsened by stress, which increases cortisol production, making the skin oilier and more prone to acne,” she adds.
4. Acne and Bumps
An unhealthy diet, such as consuming fried foods and sugary drinks, insufficient water intake, and lack of rest can disrupt the body’s metabolism. This not only affects digestion but also increases the risk of acne.
“A lack of fiber intake can also slow down the body’s detoxification process, worsening skin conditions,” she explains.
Causes of Dry and Dull Skin During Fasting
1. Fluid deficiency
Many people forget to meet their body’s fluid needs while fasting, leading to dry and dull skin.
“It is recommended to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day in a 2-4-2 pattern: 2 glasses at iftar, 4 glasses between iftar and sahur, and 2 glasses at sahur,” dr Rachmah advises.
2. Lack of Sleep
Adequate sleep is crucial for maintaining hormonal balance that affects skin health. Insufficient sleep can increase cortisol levels, worsening skin inflammation. Aim for at least 6-8 hours of sleep each night.
3. Long Showers
Taking long showers, especially with hot water, can dissolve the skin’s natural fat layer, making it drier and more prone to irritation. Use warm or cool water for showers and limit the duration to no more than 10 minutes.
4. Excessive Consumption of Oily Foods
Oily foods, such as fried items, can deplete antioxidants and increase excess oil production on the skin, potentially leading to acne.
“It is better to consume foods rich in healthy fats, such as avocados, salmon, and nuts, to maintain skin elasticity and softness,” she advises.
To maintain skin health during fasting, ensure adequate water intake, sufficient sleep, and a healthy, balanced diet. “Use natural-based moisturizers to help maintain skin moisture while fasting,” dr Rachmah concludes. (dr) (IAAS/RWA)
