The Amali Bersepadu and Kem Perhutanan activities involving students of the Bachelor of Forestry Science of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) recently succeeded in strengthening academic cooperation between UPM and IPB University.

This activity not only provided academic experience, but also introduced UPM students to various excellent research facilities at IPB University. They were invited to visit various excellent laboratories at Fahutan IPB University. Some of them are the GIS Laboratory which facilitates geographic information system-based mapping analysis and the Termite Laboratory.

Interestingly, UPM students also visited the Fire Simulator which is the only one in Southeast Asia. This Fire Simulator serves to train forest firefighting teams to be ready to face the frequent forest fires.

“The Fire Simulator at IPB University is the first and only one in Southeast Asia. This is a very important facility for more effective training of forest firefighters. Likewise with the Termite Laboratory, which provides in-depth knowledge of termite life in terms of biology and management,” said Prof Noor Farikhah Haneda, Vice Dean of Fahutan IPB University for Academic, Student Affairs, and Alumni.

The excellence of this facility is the main highlight of this activity, because it not only supports research, but also provides great benefits for UPM students.

He explained that this collaboration is very beneficial for UPM students, especially with the latest technology available at IPB University.

Furthermore, he added, “This collaboration is very valuable because it opens up opportunities for UPM students to expand their scientific network, exchange experiences, and learn more about forestry science that they may not necessarily encounter elsewhere.”

With this excellent facility, he hopes UPM students will not only learn theoretically, but also gain practical experience that will be very useful in the world of work later.

This activity shows how cooperation between universities can enrich students’ experience and knowledge. With advanced research facilities, students can be better prepared to face the challenges of forest management in the future.

In the future, similar activities are expected to continue and further strengthen the relationship between IPB University and UPM, and produce a generation of professionals who are reliable in managing natural resources in a sustainable manner. (MW) (IAAS/RUM)
