IPB University Participates in the 5th EAS Congress in Xiamen, China
A delegation from IPB University attended the East Asian Seas Congress (EAS-C) held in Xiamen, China (Nov 6-8). Under the theme “Blue Synergy on the Sea of East Asia,” the IPB University team included Rector Prof Arif Satria, Prof Tridoyo Kusumastanto, Prof Luky Adrianto, and Prof Yonvitner.
Prof Yonvitner, Chairman of IPB University’s Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (PKSPL), stated that the EAS Congress serves as an opportunity for IPB University to remain active in advancing issues, research, and programs related to marine sciences. “To remain part of the global partnership, it is essential for IPB University to participate,” said Prof Yonvitner, who also serves as President of the PEMSEA Network Learning Center (PNLC).
At the event, PKSPL represented IPB University with an exhibition booth showcasing research and innovation through papers, posters, videos, products, and policies. The booth featured projects on blue carbon, the blue economy, mangrove ecosystem restoration, Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) implementation, as well as products made from spirulina and seaweed.
This triennial event was inaugurated by Sun Shuxian, Vice Minister of Natural Resources, State Oceanic Administration, China. He emphasized three key messages: ocean and peace, ocean growth and prosperity, and the ocean as an ecological beauty platform. His brief message underscored that economic growth must be sustainable and peaceful, ensuring that the benefits of the ocean are more widely enjoyed.
IPB University also participated in a ministerial forum with countries collaborating on the East Asian Seas. Attendees included representatives from Indonesia, China, South Korea, Japan, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, and Singapore.
The Indonesian delegation, led by the Directorate General of Pollution Control and Environmental Damage, Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), shared achievements and future plans for coastal and marine management.
This ministerial meeting is expected to foster ongoing collaboration among East Asian nations in ocean management, enabling the realization of shared growth, peace, and ecological beauty. (*Rz) (IAAS/FJN)
