Wise and Responsible Use of Social Media Becomes the Focus of ITE Law Education at IPB University
In supporting the wise and responsible use of social media, the IPB University Law Bureau held legal education activities on the Electronic Information and Transaction Act (UU ITE). This activity took place at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, IPB Dramaga Campus (13/10).
Secretary of the IPB University Institute, Prof Agus Purwito said that the ITE Law is very important to be discussed in all circles including young people.
He said that young people often want to express their opinions freely on social media.
“However, keep in mind that every action on social media has consequences,” he said.
Prof Agus continued that this law provides legal certainty for all information users, both in terms of publication, learning, and understanding.
“Our digital traces will always exist, so we must be prudent in providing information, including when applying for a job, because our identity will be easily known. Personal data is also protected by the Law, so its use must be done carefully,” he said.
Chairman of the Law Bureau of IPB University, Widodo Bayu Ajie, SH said that legal education activities are carried out to highlight the phenomenon of cases that often occur in the community, including among students and university students.
“This education is important because social media has become an inseparable part of people’s lives,” he said.
He continued, many social media users are exposed to legal problems not intentionally, but because of a lack of understanding of the limitations of the rules related to what can and cannot be uploaded.
“Hopefully, today’s students can get more knowledge about the good, correct, and responsible use of social media,” he said.
Present as a resource person, Binus University Law lecturer, Siti Yuniarti, SH, MH explained that the scope of the ITE Law includes electronic data protection, computer crime, freedom of expression, electronic transaction regulation, as well as law enforcement and sanctions.
In addition, he conveyed the aspects of freedom of expression and the dissemination of information in the virtual world, including articles that regulate the limits of freedom of expression on social media.
The Chairman of the Intelligence Section of the Bogor City Prosecutor’s Office, Sigit Prabawa Nugraha, SE, SH, MH who was also present explained about the acts that are prohibited in article 27 and 28 of the ITE Law, which include insults, defamation, and the spread of hoaxes.
In addition, he provided a case study and a simple description of the scope of cybercrimes in the ITE Law. (dr/Rz) (IAAS/IAN)
