The Department of Fisheries Resource Utilization (PSP), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) IPB University successfully held the annual Capture Fisheries School (CFS) 2024 program.

The activity in the form of a summer course takes the theme ‘Technical Advancement for Sustainable Fishing Practices’ and has succeeded in attracting the attention of participants from various countries.

The chief executive of the activity, Dr Vita Rumanti Kurniawati, revealed that CFS 2024 is an important forum in supporting the development of more responsible and sustainable fisheries practices.

Held from August to October 2024, CFS activities are attended by students, researchers, and academics from various disciplines, both from within and outside the country. This activity is also an important event to increase international recognition of the PSP Department of IPB University.

The series of CFS 2024 activities began with an online public lecture on August 29 by presenting two international experts. They were Prof Richard Birmingham, a ship design expert from Newcastle University, UK and Dr Adibi Rahiman bin Md Nor, a fisheries policy expert from the University of Malaya, Malaysia. Both provided an in-depth understanding of the challenges and opportunities in the development of sustainable capture fisheries technology.

Meanwhile, a mini workshop entitled ‘Management Strategies Evaluation in Capture Fisheries’ was held on September 2-4, 2024. The mini workshop was hosted by Prof Toshihide Kitakado from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Japan.

One of the key moments in CFS 2024 was a field visit to Nizam Zachman Ocean Fishing Port and Madidihang 03 Ship, Jakarta on September 5, 2024.

“This visit gave participants direct insight into capture fisheries operations in the field, as well as the implementation of technology in daily fisheries practices,” said Dr Vita Rumanti.

The series of activities continued with a special lecture on capture fisheries technology on September 6, 2024. The participants received the latest knowledge about technological innovations that play an important role in supporting sustainable fisheries practices.

CFS 2024 was closed with a student project that was held until October 2024. Participants were challenged to deliver creative ideas related to fisheries technology innovations that can support the sustainability of the capture fisheries industry.

According to Dr Vita Rumanti, the implementation of CFS 2024 has opened opportunities for collaboration with various overseas partners and attracted international lecturers and students to be involved in it.

“CFS 2024 has also produced learning modules that can be implemented in the future, supporting IPB University’s efforts to improve the quality of education in the field of fisheries,” he concluded. (*/Nr) (IAAS/Aly)
