School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SKHB) IPB University had a special guest from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT), Dr Hitoshi Takemae. Dr Hitoshi came to IPB University to give a public lecture entitled ‘Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) as an Effort to Detect the Presence of Viruses in Animals and the Environment’. The lecture held on 25/9 was intended for students of the Veterinary Professional Education (PPDH) programme.

In his lecture, Dr Hitoshi explained about NGS, a technology that has revolutionised genomic analysis and expanded understanding of genome structure, function and dynamics.

“This innovative technology enables extensive research, allowing scientists to explore the complexity of genetic information in an unprecedented way. With its high-throughput capacity and cost-effectiveness, NGS has become a fundamental tool for researchers in various disciplines, from basic biology to clinical diagnostics,” he said.

He also added that NGS not only enables whole genome sequencing but also facilitates transcriptomic, epigenomic, metagenomic, and various other omics studies.

“The advent of NGS has transformed the field of genomics by enabling parallel sequencing of millions to billions of DNA fragments. This opens up new opportunities for understanding genetic variation, gene expression, epigenetic modifications, and microbial diversity. NGS has been instrumental in identifying disease-causing variants, uncovering new drug targets, and explaining complex biological phenomena, including tumour heterogeneity and developmental processes,” Dr Hitoshi explained.

The students who attended this public lecture gained the latest insights into the science and development of cutting-edge diagnostic techniques. (DO/Lp) (IAAS/RUM)
