IPB University in collaboration with the Regional Government of Central Bangka, held a capacity building program for fishermen, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and seafood processors in Central Bangka in a series of Kedaireka programs. This program is aimed at improving the welfare of coastal communities in Central Bangka by presenting a wide range of innovations, from fishery product processing to digital marketing.

IPB University, through collaboration with the Regional Development Planning, Research and Development Agency (Bappelitbangda) of Central Bangka, presented lecturers, Prof Mohammad Imron and Prof Sugeng Hari Wisudo, who are experts in handling and preserving fish on board.

“The participants were given training related to catch handling techniques and also introduced environmentally friendly cooling technology. They seemed very enthusiastic and interested in applying the technology that has been introduced,” said Prof Sugeng.

Meanwhile, Prof Uju, an expert in fish processing, also provided training on the innovation of processed seafood products. The participants consisted of a group of mothers and local fish processors. Participants were trained to turn squid catches into high-value products, such as crispy squid, sweet and sour squid, and squid meatballs.

“This activity is expected to open new business opportunities, as well as increase the income of coastal communities through product diversification, not only focusing on processing seafood,” said Prof Uju.

The program also involved digital marketing training by Dr Firda for MSMEs, cooperatives, and youth organizations in Central Bangka. In this session, participants were invited to utilize digital technology in product marketing, including the creation of a marketplace and attractive product photography techniques. “With this guidance, the participants learned how to overcome marketing challenges and expand their market reach effectively,” said Dr Frida.

The collaboration conducted by IPB University through the Kedaireka program not only enriches the technical knowledge of the community, but also encourages the spirit of innovation and independence. This program is expected to pave the way for the people of Central Bangka to be more independent in managing the potential of fisheries and local MSMEs, by utilizing modern technology and innovation in processing seafood from upstream to downstream.

The event was also attended by Dr Joko Triadhi as the Chairman of Bappelitbangda and Imam Soehadi as the Chairman of the Central Bangka Marine and Fisheries Agency. (*/Lp) (IAAS/ZQA)
