Forma IPH and PT Cedar Karyatama Lestarindo Hold Carbon Accounting Training for IPB University Students
The Forest Management Science Student Forum (Forma IPH) in collaboration with PT Cedar Karyatama Lestarindo held a Carbon Accounting training (4-5/10). This activity took place in two locations, namely Mahoni Lecture Room and Sylva Conference Room, Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan), IPB Dramaga Campus. In addition, a field practice session was held at the Arboretum Fahutan IPB University.
This training was attended by 25 IPB University Postgraduate students from the Forest Management Study Program (Prodi) who had gone through the selection process. The opening ceremony was also attended by the Chairperson of the Forest Management Department of IPB University, Dr Soni Trison, who gave a speech and officially opened the event. Also present were the Director of PT Cedar Karyatama Lestarindo, Muhammad Ridwan, SHut, and Green Indonesia media who covered the event.
In his speech, Dr Soni Trison expressed his appreciation for the implementation of this activity. “The role of students is not only as recipients of material, but also as critical parties in developing new thoughts, considering that the forestry sector continues to develop. Therefore, I encourage Forma IPH to be more innovative in organizing future activities,” he said.
The Chair of Forma IPH also gave his views on the development of the forestry sector, especially related to ‘carbon trading’ which has been started since the 1972 Environmental Conference in Sweden. Although there is a debate about its impact on the economy of developing countries, forestry students are expected to be able to understand both theory and practice related to these developments.
The chief executive of the activity also reported that this training was fully supported by the Forest Management Study Program, Forest Management Department, and Fahutan IPB University, and in collaboration with Green Indonesia.co.
The purpose of this training is to increase the capacity of students in various aspects, including field data collection and calculation of carbon stocks in forests and land, understanding Forest Reference Level (FRL) as the basis for emission reference calculations, mitigation action planning and calculation of land-based emission reductions (FOLU), and general understanding of carbon taxes and monetization of carbon emission calculations.
The material presented in this training covers important topics such as international policies related to climate change, opportunities and challenges of carbon tax, forest inventory, and introduction to geographic information system (GIS) for forest and land carbon stock calculation.
With this training, students are expected to be able to make a positive contribution in developing knowledge in the field of forestry and be ready to face the challenges that exist in this sector. (*/Rz) (IAAS/Hap)
