Various experts from various disciplines gathered to discuss the resilience of sustainable ecosystems at an international symposium at IPB University. The event was packaged in The 4th International Symposium on Transdisciplinary Approach for Knowledge Co-Creation in Sustainability (ISTAKCOS) 2024 with the theme ‘Ecosystem Resilience for Sustainability and Social Justice’. The event was held in a hybrid manner at the IPB International Convention Center, (2-3/10).

In this seminar, the experts who attended from within and outside the country delivered studies on the resilience of sustainable ecosystems seen from various scientific perspectives. Starting from local wisdom and community social life, national development planning, to how to reconcile conflicts between generations so that a sustainable ecosystem is created.

This year’s ISTAKCOS presented speakers including Andrew Scau (National University of Singapore/NUS), Prof Keishiro Hara (Center for Future Innovation/CFI Osaka University, Japan) and Dr Jarot Indarto (National Development Planning Agency of the Republic of Indonesia/Bappenas), Akbar Ario Digdo, MSi (YAPEKA Foundation), Prof Premana W Premadi (Astrophysicist and Cosmologist of Bandung Institute of Technology). Participants who attended came from various countries such as the Philippines, Myanmar, Egypt, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and Indonesia.

Rector of IPB University, Prof Arif Satria at this symposium said that ecosystem resilience is fundamental in overcoming sustainability challenges. He said that healthy and resilient ecosystems provide important ecosystems that support human welfare, such as clean air and water, fertile soil, and climate regulation.

“At IPB University, public-private engagement contributes importantly to the goal of ecosystem sustainability. For example, collaboration between IPB University, the private sector, and farmers has resulted in initiatives aimed at sustainable agriculture, smart agricultural technology, and environmentally friendly food production systems,” he said.

Currently, he said, IPB University has touched more than 6,9 percent of villages in Indonesia. This is proof that IPB University has entered the villages to spread innovation to the wider community including providing an understanding of sustainable aspects.

Prof Damayanti Buchori, Chief of Center for Transdisciplinary and Sustainability Sciences (PKSKT)/Center for Transdisciplinary and Sustainability Sciences (CTSS) – International Research Institute for Environment and Climate Change (LRI LPI) IPB University explained related to this symposium. He said that transdisciplinary approaches offer opportunities to find new ways and innovations through unique approaches that transcend disciplines, breaking down the boundaries of science and local knowledge, institutions, and culture.

“The core essence of transdisciplinarity is a collaborative effort to generate knowledge and science to support policy. This holistic approach is expected to produce comprehensive solutions that can be accepted by all stakeholders. By working together and adopting innovative solutions, we can build a more resilient and sustainable future for everyone: people, planet earth, and all living things on it,” he said.
