The Engineer Profession Program (PPI) of the Graduate School (SPs) of IPB University again held a public lecture with the theme ‘The Role of Engineers in the Professional Work World’ (24/8). The activity was held online by presenting speakers Dr Desiderius Viby Indrayana (Director of Building, Area, and Urban Management of the Nusantara Capital Authority) and Dr Yanuar J Purwanto (Chairman of Sustainable Professional Development of the Indonesian Engineers Association) as well as moderator Prof Hartrisari H (Lecturer PPI IPB University).

The activity was opened by Prof Lina Karlinasari, Coordinator of Forestry Engineering PPI IPB University. In her speech, she expressed his gratitude to the speakers and public lecture participants, PPI IPB University students, both the Regular and Past Learning Recognition (RPL) pathways.

“We hope this public lecture can refresh and remind us again about the relevance and importance of professionalism aspects to carry out the duties and roles of engineers in development,” she said.

Prof Lina explained that PPI is a mandate of Law (UU) Number 11 of 2014 concerning Engineering, as an effort by the government to prepare engineers in the number and qualifications needed to build a more advanced Indonesia. “For that, the government gave a mandate to 40 universities, one of which is IPB University to organise PPI to realise that ideal,” she explained.

She added that engineers are those who are expected to be able to provide added value, provide solutions to problems, create something that previously did not exist, and who are able to make the previously impossible become possible.

“In addition to these abilities, an engineer is also required to be an independent, professional, responsible person, respecting the code of ethics and having professional ethics,” she added.

That time, Dr Desiderius Viby Indrayana explained the various roles of engineers in development in Indonesia and explained the importance of the spirit of engineering and professionalism in the world of work.” An engineer must always be able to be professional by firmly holding on to the science and code of ethics of engineers in facing various problems in the world of work,” she added.

Dr Yanuar J Purwanto said that the engineer position in Indonesia has been regulated in the Engineering Law. The rights and obligations owned by a professional engineer have been clearly stated in the Law. “PPI ensures that in the future, engineers who practise in Indonesia have competencies that are suitable for their work needs,” he said.
