The Directorate of Agromaritime Community Development (DPMA) of IPB University, in collaboration with the Forestry and Environment Faculty Alumni Association (HA-E), successfully organized the Social Forestry Bootcamp 2024 (September 2-3). This event took place in Cikajang District, Garut Regency, West Java, focusing on enhancing the capacity and understanding of community groups in managing forest land sustainably.

During the event, participants had the opportunity to visit the coffee production center of the Mandalagiri Cooperative. There, they learned about the coffee processing chain from start to finish, including coffee fruit picking to the final processing stages. This activity not only provided practical insights but also opened space for discussions through a focus group discussion (FGD) involving various stakeholders.

Additionally, the participants visited Jaya Mekar Village to directly observe the agroforestry land developed since 2021. The land is planted with coffee, avocado, and durian, serving as a real-life example of social forestry practices that are both productive and environmentally friendly.

Bernard Langoday, one of the bootcamp speakers, shared his thoughts on the event. “Social Forestry Bootcamp 2024 is not just an event but a crucial moment for all of us to witness firsthand land management practices that truly impact both community welfare and environmental sustainability. I hope this enthusiasm can spread to more regions to improve forest management across Indonesia,” said Bernard.

This initiative is expected to inspire and encourage Social Forestry Business Groups (KUPS) in various regions to optimize the land management permits granted by the government. With proper management, forests can become a source of community welfare while preserving environmental sustainability. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
