Occupational safety and health (K3) is the main concern for the people of forest farmers in Karacak Village, Bogor Regency, West Java who are famous for their durian production. Considering the high risk faced by farmers when harvesting durian, especially in tree harvesting activities, IPB University students recently held a special training on the implementation of K3.

The IPB University student is the implementation team of the Student Organisation Capacity Building Program (PPK Ormawa) from the Forest Management Students’ Club (FMSC). This training aims to increase the awareness and skills of farmers in maintaining work safety during the harvesting process.

This two-day training involves various modern techniques to ensure the safety of farmers while working. The participants were taught the use of auto stop devices, pulley systems, and special devices such as gri-gri and figure of eight, which can reduce the risk of accidents when climbing tall durian trees.

In addition, participants also gained knowledge about the use of personal protective equipment (APD) and proper pampering techniques, ranging from knot techniques to anchor techniques that are important to maintain stability and safety when working at heights.

According to one of the training instructors, Hadiyan, the implementation of good K3 will allow farmers to work more efficiently without neglecting their safety.

“Safety is the top priority in field work. With the right technique and equipment, the risk of accidents can be minimised so that farmers can work more safely and productively,” said Mohammad Rizqi Akbar. He added, with the skills obtained through this training, it is hoped that farmers can reduce work injuries that often occur due to conventional pampering methods that are less safe.

In addition to increasing work safety, this training is also expected to increase farmer productivity. With better skills in using modern tools and applying the right techniques, the time needed to harvest durian can be shortened, while maintaining the quality of the harvested fruit. This will certainly have a positive impact on the increase in farmers’ income in Karacak Village.

“This K3 training program is part of the efforts of PPK Ormawa FMSC IPB University to build awareness of the importance of work safety in the public forest sector. Hopefully, with initiatives like this, durian farmers in Karacak Village can be an example for other areas in implementing good and sustainable safety practises, so that their welfare and health are maintained,” said Ismawati Dwi Kartika, a representative of IPB University students.
