Dr Sofyan Sjaf, Dean of the Faculty of Human Ecology (Fema) IPB University explained, through the Precision Village Data approach, Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) engaged in the cassava business can transform into a strong and competitive economic entity. With the right data and measurable strategies, BUMDes are expected to significantly improve the welfare of rural communities.

He conveyed this in an in-depth presentation at a webinar entitled ‘Increasing the Added Value of Cassava as a BUMDes Business’, Thursday (29/8). This webinar is a collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia and the Indonesian Cassava Society, aiming to explore the potential of cassava in the context of BUMDes development.

In his presentation, Dr Sofyan highlighted the importance of the Precision Village Data approach as the key to optimizing cassava-based businesses. He explained that Precision Village Data is an innovative methodology that collects comprehensive and detailed data on economic and social conditions at the village level.

“Precision Village Data gives us the ability to conduct accurate mapping of village economic potential, including the untapped potential of cassava,” said the figure behind the Precision Village Data innovation.

A total of 2,188 BUMDes in Indonesia have been established. However, data shows that 1,670 operating BUMDes have yet to show significant economic contributions. According to Dr. Sofyan, this data-driven approach is crucial to address the issue.

“Based on the data we collected, we found that many BUMDes operate sub-optimally due to the absence of a deep understanding of their local potential. With Precision Village Data, we can identify and capitalize on economic potential that has been overlooked,” he explained.

The data obtained from this approach also shows economic inequality and high unemployment rates in villages. Dr Sofyan emphasized, “This data reveals a direct link between poverty, unemployment, and low human development. With accurate data, we can identify problems more clearly and formulate more effective solutions.”

In the context of cassava, he said, the Precision Village Data approach allows for better identification of production and market potential. Cassava, as a source of food and energy, has great potential to boost the village economy if managed properly.

“With this data approach, we can see that cassava is not only food but also an economic commodity that has high added value if processed properly,” said Dr Sofyan.

He also underlined the need for collaboration between various parties, including village governments, communities, and the private sector.

“Close collaboration between the village and various stakeholders is essential to build an effective and sustainable BUMDes. It is not only about financial investment but also about sharing knowledge and resources,” he emphasized. (MW/Rz) (IAAS/SNJ)
