Sumedang Regency Government and IPB University Launch Mandala Sumedang Analog Rice: An Alternative Solution to Food Scarcity
The Sumedang Regency Government (Pemkab Sumedang), in collaboration with IPB University and Widyatama University, has introduced an innovative advancement in the food sector, launching two flagship products: Mandala rice (analog rice) and organic rice. The launch event for these two premier food products was officiated by the Acting Regent of Sumedang, Yudia Ramli, following the commemoration of Indonesia’s Independence Day on Saturday (17/8)..
Professor Slamet Budijanto, a Professor of Food Technology at IPB University and the innovator behind the project, explained his and his research team’s role in the development of Mandala Sumedang analog rice. In this partnership, IPB University functions as the provider of the innovation and also serves as a mentor during the implementation of Mandala rice. The plan is for Mandala rice to be further developed within the Special Economic Zone (KEK) in Sumedang.
“During the launch, the Sumedang Regency Government committed to making analog rice one of the flagship products of the Sumedang KEK. The hope is that this will strengthen food diversification to bolster food security,” added Professor Slamet, who also serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology at IPB University.
Mandala rice is produced from non-rice ingredients such as cassava. This analog rice can be processed and served similarly to regular rice. Professor Slamet stated that this product holds significant potential as an alternative food source, particularly in times of rice shortages.
The IPB University research team involved in the innovation of Mandala rice includes Professor Slamet Budijanto, Dr Tri Prartono, Dr Sri Mulatsih, Dr Burhanuddin, and Azroo Alfaqih Rojuli. The research was conducted through funding from the Productive Innovative Research (Rispro) scheme by the Education Fund Management Institution, Ministry of Finance.
Additionally, the Sumedang Regency Government is working with Widyatama University to develop Organic Rice in Cikurubuk Village, Buahdua District, Sumedang. With 63,60 percent of the total 630,80 hectares of Cikurubuk Village being agricultural land, this area is highly suitable for organic rice cultivation. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
