As part of strengthening the long-standing cooperation with Xiamen University (XMU), Internationa; Research Institute For Maritime, Ocean and Fisheries (LRI i-MAR) invited Prof Huasheng Hong, a senior expert in the theory and practice of integrated coastal management (ICM) to IPB University (6-7/8).

One of the activities carried out was the implementation of a hybrid Strategic Lecture at the Department of Aquatic Resource Management (MSP), IPB Dramaga Campus and Collaborative Meeting with colleagues from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) IPB University (6/8). 

In addition to the MSP Department, i-MAR collaborated with the Centre for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (PKSPL) in the implementation of this Strategic Lecture which was attended by postgraduate students within FPIK as well as other participants from outside such as from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

The Chief of LRI i-MAR IPB University, Prof Luky Adrianto said in the opening that this activity was an opportunity to engage with leading experts and gain a better understanding of learning about integrated coastal management through practical experience from XMU.

The activity continued with a Courtesy Meeting led by Prof Luky Adrianto and attended by Prof Fredinan Yulianda (Dean of FPIK), Prof Ario Damar (Chairman of Study Program/Prodi S3 Coastal and Marine Resource Management/SPL), Dr Zairion (Chairman of SPL S2 Study Program), Dr M Mukhlis Kamal (Chairman of Aquatic Resource Management/SDP S2 Study Program), Dr Kustiariyah, and Dr Ayu Ervinia.

Prof Fredinan Yulianda as Dean of FPIK IPB University said that what the lecturers did was not only teaching in class, but carrying out the tridarma of higher education, namely in addition to education, research and community service were also carried out. “Students have the opportunity to go abroad so that it opens up opportunities for collaboration,” he said. 

Prof Luky Adrianto as the host of this courtesy meeting added that the ideas of collaboration between XMU and IPB University include student exchange, staff mobility, sandwich programme, joint-workshop, joint-summer course, and research collaboration.

Meanwhile, Prof Hong explained that he had experience in carbon research on mangroves and seagrasses in China. He also mentioned the cooperation plan that will be carried out by both institutions. ‘”The signing of the extension of the cooperation agreement between XMU and IPB University which will be held in November 2024 emphasises the field of interest in coastal and marine studies,” he added.

The scope of cooperation will include research and academics in the fields of aquatic biodiversity studies, fisheries resources, pollution reduction management based on land and sea connectivity, blue carbon research, and marine academic programmes such as interdisciplinary international programmes, supported by several available grants such as the China Marine Government Scholarship, XMU scholarships, and others.

During his visit to Indonesia, Prof Hong also had the opportunity to visit one of the ICM Sites in Indonesia, Ketapang Mangrove Ecosystem Park located in Tangerang Regency, Banten (7/8). During the visit, the i-MAR/PKSPL IPB University team and Prof Hong were received by the Tangerang Regency Government represented by the Department of Environment and Hygiene. (DY/LA/Rz) (IAAS/RSL)
