The Science and Technology Area Institution (LKST) at IPB University recently held the IPB Innovation for Commercialization Selection 2024. The event took place at the IPB International Convention Center (IICC) in Bogor and was attended by a team of experts, including both academics and practitioners.

In her opening remarks, Erika B Laconi, Chief of LKST IPB University, emphasized the importance of collaboration between research institutions and industry to facilitate the utilization of inventions to meet market needs.

“In the Matching Fund Program (PDP), the contribution of funds from industry for innovation development collaboration has continued to increase, and this year, it surpassed the funds provided by the government. This indicates that the intellectual work of innovators is already in demand and highly needed by industry partners,” said Prof Erika.

She also noted that the innovations produced by inventors are not only recognized by the public but also have great potential for commercial application.

Prof Erika revealed that IPB University has become the institution with the largest research funding in 2024. However, she advised that research outcomes should still be aligned with market needs.

“Therefore, the contribution of experts is crucial to ensure that research results are tailored to market demands,” she added.

As part of this effort, IPB University will establish an Invention Commercialization Committee composed of experts in various fields that are the focus of IPB University.

Some of the IPB University experts present at the event included:

– Khaswar Syamsu, Faculty of Agricultural Technology (Fateta), IPB

– Made Astawan, Fateta IPB

– Dewi Apri Astuti, Faculty of Animal Science, IPB

– Dyah Iswantini, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), IPB

– Marimin, Fateta IPB

– Handito Joewono, Chairman of the Indonesian Export School, Indonesian Food and Beverage Producers Association (GAPMMI)

– Sidi Asmono, Chairman of Strategy and Advocacy, National Farmers and Fishermen Contact Group (KTNA)

The expectation is that this team will play a key role in evaluating and recommending innovations that are ready for commercialization, providing direction for inventors’ products that meet market needs, and recommending potential partners for collaboration.

Yuni Puji Hastuti, Assistant for Intellectual Property Management and Commercialization at LKST IPB University, explained that the selection process for inventions is based on two main aspects: product and business prospects. The product aspect includes novelty/originality, utility, societal acceptance, advantages, and technology readiness.

The business prospect aspect covers development (product diversification), process and technology application, availability of raw materials, market reach, investment potential, potential collaboration with investors, and regulatory and licensing considerations.

“These criteria are designed to ensure that the innovations produced are not only technically superior but also have strong business potential and market acceptance,” she added.

This event is expected to encourage more collaboration between IPB and industry so that the innovations produced can have a real impact on society and the national economy. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
