The Directorate of Agromaritime Community Development (DPMA) of IPB University officially held the Kick Off of Drone School 2024 (21/8). This event was the first step in a series of activities aimed at introducing and utilizing drone technology in mapping and remote sensing needs.

Dr M Iqbal Irfany, Assistant Director of Social Entrepreneurship DPMA IPB University, in his speech emphasized the importance of using drones as a tool capable of providing accurate and informative data.

“The use of drones is very useful for obtaining data that can generate information and can be used to make decisions or other policies. In the future, this technology can be used to develop villages through precise data,” he said.

The event also presented Qori Pebrial Ilham, SHut, MSi, a Forestry Drone Engineer and IPB University lecturer at the Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan). In his session, he presented material on ‘Remote Sensing and Introduction to Drones’, which provided a basic understanding of how drones work and their practical applications in the forestry and environmental fields. He talked about the basic principles of remote sensing, introduction to drone technology, and introduction to drone mapping.

The use of drones has relevance to various fields, including agriculture (plant health, precision agriculture), forestry and environment (forest and deforestation monitoring, environmental degradation), disaster, meteorology, to military and security.

The enthusiasm of the participants was high, especially since the Drone School program offers the opportunity for participants to fulfill their semester credit units (SKS) needs. They also compete for professional drone pilot certification that will be awarded to the top 10 participants. This is certainly a plus for their future careers and competencies.

With this Kick Off event, DPMA IPB University hopes that drone technology can be optimally utilized for the advancement of village development, natural resource management, increasing the productivity of the agromaritime sector, and supporting more accurate and effective data-based decision making in various regions of Indonesia.
