In order to commemorate Coral Triangle Day as well as celebrate the 497th Anniversary of Jakarta, the DKI Jakarta Department of Marine Food Security and Agriculture (KPKP) organised the Coral Triangle Day 2024 action, with the theme Balancing Marine Conservation and Blue Economy.

The activity involved students from Jabodetabek and was held from 26-27 June on Tidung Kecil Island and Pramuka Island. The Coral Triangle Day activities included coral transplantation, mangrove planting, fish restocking, turtle release, beach cleaning, underwater clean up, introduction to marine cultivation, creative content competition and snorkelling.

The activity also involved several DKI Jakarta Regional Work Units (SKPD) to universities, in this case IPB University through the Centre for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (PKSPL) IPB University.

Participants of the activity were invited to visit the Field Station of the PKSPL IPB University Sea Farming Centre in Semak Daun Waters. During the visit, the Head of PKSPL IPB University, represented by the Head of the Science Techno Park (STP) Division of PKSPL IPB University, welcomed the arrival of Coral Triangle Day participants, all of whom were young people.

“The involvement of the easy generation in Coral Triangle Day activities is very important, because it is very much in line with the rebuilding of mariculture which is the first of the five pillars of Indonesia as the World Maritime Axis,” explained M.Qustam Sahibuddin, Head of STP PKSPL IPB University.

He continued, Indonesia has great potential in the marine and fisheries sector, one of which is mariculture. Therefore, IPB University through PKSPL implemented the Sea Farming Programme in 2005 by collaborating with the DKI Jakarta KPKP and the Marine Food Security and Agriculture Office of the Thousand Islands Administrative Regency.

“The Sea Farming Programme has successfully implemented its concept and transferred useful knowledge to the people of Pulau Panggang Village. Through the programme, the community has mastered sea farming technology and succeeded in producing 22.3 tonnes of live grouper with a value of Rp 2.97 billion from 2006 to 2019,” said Qustam.

He hoped the visit could broaden the participants’ knowledge so that they would become young people who care about building Indonesia’s marine and fisheries in the future.

Meanwhile, Head of Jakarta KPKP Agency, Suharini Eliawati said, “This activity is one of the steps to prepare Jakarta to become a Global City with a Million Charms, meaning that the government and the community are preparing in food barns, biodiversity of biological natural resources, conservation, tourism and so on,” said Suharini.
