In the framework of the Thematic Real Work Lecture (KKNT) Innovation, IPB students organized a ‘Plant Pests and Diseases Counseling’ activity at the Cihamerang Village Office, Kabandungan District, Sukabumi Regency, West Java.

This activity was carried out with the aim of providing alternative solutions for farmers in overcoming the problems of jaundice (gemini virus) and wilt disease (Fusarium fungus) that attack chili, tomato, long bean, and rice commodities in Cihamerang Village.

Dr Yunik Istikorini, IPB University lecturer from the Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan) and Asep Awaludin, Plant Disturbing Organism Control Officer (P-OPT), also attended the event as resource persons. Both provided counseling on the introduction and control of pests and diseases in horticultural crops and rice.

“Hopefully this activity can increase the knowledge and skills of farmers in Cihamerang Village in overcoming these problems,” said Ilham Fatkhy Alam, one of the KKNT Inoovation IPB University team members.

In addition, KKNT Innovation  IPB University students also provided practical training in making vegetable pesticides and eco enzymes. This step was taken to reduce dependence on chemical pesticides that often cause pest resistance and increase chemical residues in crops.

“Hopefully, the use of these natural ingredients can restore soil fertility and support sustainable agriculture in Cihamerang Village,” he said.

As an effort to improve access to information and consultation for farmers, KKNT Innovation students also introduced the Digitani IPB application to the Cihamerang Village farmer group. Ilham said, “This application allows farmers to consult with experts regarding the agricultural problems they face.”

IPB University’s KKNT Inovation students have actively contributed for 40 days in Cihamerang Village, starting from July 24 to August 5, 2024 onwards. Ilham hopes that this activity will not only improve farmers’ technical skills, but also provide sustainable solutions in facing future agricultural challenges. (*/Rz) (IAAS/HLF)
