Instilling Growth Mindset, IPB University PKM PM Team Restores the Learning Spirit of Street Children
In an effort to improve the educational spirit of street children in Sentra Mulya Jaya Flat Jakarta, a group of IPB University students held a Community Service Student Creativity Programme (PKM-PM).
The PKM PM team led by Nava Olivia Rahmah with four members, Maulana Luthfi Galib, Muhammad Amrul Haq Maulana, Abimanyu Pratama, and Syaraviena Putri Prasetya gave lessons to street children with innovative methods that are unique and different from the usual.
This team of IPB University students developed the Learning Cycle 5E method (explore, engage, elaborate, evaluate, explain) wrapped through game-based learning. There were 12 meetings with a total of 5 programmes.
Nava explained that the programme began with the Journey of Mind and Thinking, which instilled children’s mindset through watching inspirational films and playing flash cards. “This programme succeeded in having an impact on increasing confidence about future goals, from 8.3 percent to 82.7 percent,” she said.
The next programme is called Journey of Adventure, which is learning through escape room media. This media contains challenges that must be passed by the participants. Then Journey of Discovery, playing big snakes and ladders with questions about mindset development and general knowledge. Both programmes succeeded in increasing learning motivation from 14.2 per cent to 88.3 per cent.
“The journey gets more exciting through the Journey of Dreams programme. In this programme, children are given the opportunity to paint their dreams on cloth and tell their friends what they have painted,” she said.
The programme that focuses on the education of street children is closed with the Journey of Appreciation, where each child is given the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of many people, including their parents. To close the whole series, the PKM PM team also gave appreciation in the form of certificates, medals, and gifts to all street children of Sentra Mulya Jaya Flats.
“The last two programmes gave satisfactory results, namely increasing the supportive environment from 17.5 per cent to 92.7 per cent. Children’s self-confidence also increased from 21.6 per cent to 96.8 per cent as evidenced by children willing to perform art in front of many programmes after the event,” she said.
Nava said, this service programme also gave results at the school where the children studied. A total of 16 out of 25 children got an increase in report card grades at school. Then 9 out of 25 others became willing to go to school because they did not go to school in the first place.
“Children who initially closed themselves and were reluctant to learn because of the absence of learning facilities and media, are now helped by the PKM team to be willing and eager to learn again. Teaching division of one team member for five children is also carried out to create a more effective and conducive learning atmosphere,” she explained.
Sentra Mulya Jaya flat partners and parents are also very enthusiastic about this programme, because so far there has been no programme for children in the flat. Therefore, the arrival of the PKM team was very welcomed.
“This student programme is good, because it makes my child more diligent in learning because the learning method is fun while playing,” said Amel, one of the target parents. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
