Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) IPB University successfully held The 2nd International Seminar on Ocean Sciences and Sustainability (ISOSS) on Monday-Tuesday (8-9/7). This international seminar was held hybridly with the theme ‘Mapping the Future: Hydrography, Ocean Sciences, and Sustainability’.

Rector of IPB University, Prof Arif Satria in his speech said, “Improving the understanding and application of marine science and the sustainable utilisation of marine-based resources will help overcome various challenges faced by our oceans,”

“The need for Indonesian hydrographic data is very urgent to ensure that all information at the bottom of the Indonesian sea is fully used for the benefit of Indonesia,” said Prof Arif.

In line with the statement of the Rector of IPB University, First Admiral (Laksma) of Indonesian National Armed Force (TNI), Siswanto, ST, MT highlighted Indonesia’s vast marine wealth, abundant marine resources, and high marine biodiversity. This opens up great potential for Indonesian maritime trade.

“Collaboration with educational institutions and research institutions is important to obtain scientific data and scientific views from experts in determining good policies and regulations for long-term management to ensure the sustainability of the national ecosystem and economy,” he explained.

However, Indonesia’s sea is threatened by a number of pressures that can affect the environment, social, and economy, including overfishing, excessive exploitation of marine resources, marine pollution, invasive foreign species, habitat destruction, and climate change.

“It is very important to ensure a healthy and sustainable ocean in the midst of this challenging global climate. ISOSS 2024 becomes a forum for stakeholders starting from practitioners, academics, industry players, and actors from other sectors to share knowledge and experiences that have been done in the effort to preserve the Indonesian sea,” said Prof Fredinan Yulianda, Dean of FPIK IPB University.

A number of invited speakers attended this international seminar, namely Associate Professor Dr Ong Meng Chuan (University of Malaysia Terengganu), Dr Gonzalo Perez-Rosales (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), Prof Neviaty Putri Zamani and Prof Henry M Manik (IPB University). This activity was moderated by IPB University lecturers, Prof Jonson Lumban Gaol and Dr Beginer Subhan. ISOSS 2024 was attended by no less than 100 participants from 6 countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, England, Hong Kong, Turkey, and Japan.

“A total of 49 abstracts have been presented successfully, followed by an interesting discussion. The participants involved have various perspectives to enrich their understanding,” said Dr Syamsul Bahri Agus, Chairman of the Marine Science and Technology (ITK) Department of IPB University.

At the end of the event, Dr Steven Solikin as the Managing Chairman of ISOSS 2024 revealed that the success of this event cannot be separated from the financial support from LPDP WUR and Nusantara Geoscience Institute (NGI). In addition, he is also happy to announce and invite the participants to participate in the next meeting in Ambon which will be funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) in October 2024 as the second part of this seminar series.
