Celebrating Fisherman’s Day, IPB University Innovation Real-Thematic Work Lecture Students Hold Beach Cleanup Action
Several IPB University students from the Innovation Thematic Real Work Lecture (KKNT) team carried out clean-up actions in the Palangpang Geopark Ciletuh Beach area, Ciwaru Village, Ciemas District, Sukabumi Regency (5/11).
The beach cleanup was a form of environmental conservation to commemorate the 67th Fisherman’s Day celebration in collaboration with Ciwaru Village apparatus, all levels of the surrounding community, and visitors to Palangpang Beach.
“The activities carried out aim to preserve the Ciletuh Geopark area as a UNESCO Global Geopark. In addition, this activity is intended to increase public awareness and concern for beach cleanliness as a valuable asset in the tourism sector, Sofian Annas, a student representative of IPB University, said.
Sofian said that the Palangpang Beach area is currently filled with trash, dominated by wood waste and clothing carried from upstream. The trash has been buried in sand due to the tides, making it difficult to lift and clean.
According to one of the local residents, Sahaudin, who participated in the beach cleanup action, the trash on the beach comes from visitors who come, and the upstream part of the river is carried away when the tide is high.
“The trash on the beach is not entirely from local residents but comes from visitors and from upstream. Despite this, local residents routinely carry out beach cleaning activities every Friday. The trash will continue to grow even though it is routinely cleaned as the volume of visitors and trash carried from upstream rivers increases,” said Sahaudin.
The beach cleanup activities that have been carried out are expected to increase the awareness and concern of the local community and visitors for the preservation of beaches and the sea, including the biodiversity ecosystems within them. In addition, this activity is expected to be carried out regularly so that the cleanliness of the beach area is maintained.
“This beach area can be likened to a personal item, when we feel that the item is ours, then we will take good care of the item so that it is durable and maintained. Just like the beach, the sea, and the diversity of biological ecosystems that must be preserved and sustained,” said Sofian.
The next step, Sofian said, Innovation Real-Thematic Work Lecture IPB University students will carry out socialization about Bina Cinta Laut in which it will be explained about increasing awareness of the surrounding community as well as maintaining and loving the marine ecosystem and utilizing waste around the beach.
