Residents of Fahutan IPB University Commemorate World Environment Day, Plant 300 Trees

In commemoration of World Environment Day, Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan) IPB University conducted a joint tree planting action in the Forest Park area of IPB Dramaga Campus (9/6). The activity involved 160 participants by planting as many as 300 forest plant seedlings of khaya (Khaya anthotheca), mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni) and meranti (Shorea sp) tree species.

The theme for this planting activity was “Plant Trees to Lower Emissions”. Through this theme, it is expected that the participants of the planting activity have contributed to efforts to reduce emissions, especially in the environment of IPB Dramaga Campus.

Dean of Fahutan IPB University, Prof Naresworo Nugroho hoped that tree planting activities could become a culture attached to every forestry scholar and forester. He also reminded the importance of planting trees and caring for them to absorb emissions. Planting trees also increases the environmental service value of the tree community for biodiversity conservation and plays a role in environmental education.

“This planting action should not only be done to commemorate Environment Day, but should be done sustainably. Therefore, support not only from partners, but awareness from the academic community in the form of morals is needed,” he said.

Dr Nyoto Santoso, Chairperson of the Campus Forest Park Arboretum Management Team hoped that all residents and partners would continue to improve biodiversity in the environment of IPB Dramaga Campus. By planting trees on critical land is a real action in improving the quality of habitat for biodiversity (kehati). This effort will also help increase the absorption of greenhouse gas emissions and provide value to the community.

This activity was attended and followed by Fahutan IPB University residents. Consisting of lecturers and education staff (tendik), as well as students from BEM Fahutan, Forest Resource Conservation and Ecotourism Student Association (Himakova), Forest Management Student Club (FMSC), Forest Products Student Association (Himasiltan), Tree Grower Community (TGC).

In addition, Agrianita Fahutan and students of kindergartens, elementary schools, and high schools around IPB Darmaga Campus were present. Partners who attended, namely PT United Tractors Tbk and Yayasan Karya Bhakti United Tractors. Prospective partners from PT Astra Daihatsu Motor were also present in an effort to explore opportunities for cooperation with Fahutan IPB University in the Environmental Care program.
