The Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (PKSPL)-International Research Institute for Maritime, Marine and Fisheries (LRI i-MAR) IPB University is organising the 19th Islands of the World Conference with the theme ‘Islands and Resilience: Global Opportunities’.

This activity was organised in collaboration with the University of Mataram, the Archipelagic and Islands States Forum (AIS), and the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA). The event will be held on 25-29 June 2024 in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Province and attended by more than 120 presenters from 25 countries.

“The 19th ‘Islands of the World’ conference is an important platform for researchers, policy makers, and practitioners to exchange knowledge and experiences in dealing with challenges unique to small islands,” said Prof Yonvitner, head of Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (PKSPL) IPB University

With a focus on global resilience and opportunity, he added, the conference highlighted the importance of international co-operation in addressing the impacts of climate change. It also served as a platform to promote a sustainable blue economy, and ensure that island cultures and biodiversity are preserved.

“Through multidisciplinary discussions, the conference seeks to generate implementable strategies to strengthen island ecosystems and communities,” added Prof Yonvitner.

This activity is also supported by the International Collaboration Office (ICO) of IPB University, the Provincial Government of West Nusa Tenggara, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the Ministry of National Development Planning / National Development Planning Agency (Kementerian PPN / Bappenas), PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara, Rekam Nusantara Foundation, and ClimateWork Centre.

“Through the support of these various parties, this international conference is expected to be part of the efforts to overcome the challenges of sustainable development within the framework of the United Nations (UN) Decade of Marine Science for Sustainable Development and the 2030 SDGs agenda,” said the Head of PKSPL IPB University.
