SKHB IPB University Invites Veterinarians and Students to Visit Koi Fish Farms

School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SKHB) IPB University together with the Center for Tropical Animal Studies held a Basic Workshop: Health Management and Diagnostic Approach for Ornamental Fish or Indonesian Fish Workshop on 27-28/4.

This activity discusses fish health management and fish disease diagnosis techniques, especially in koi fish. This activity is a forum for veterinarians and prospective veterinarians to expand their network in the field of aquatic medicine. The activity was attended by 22 participants consisting of veterinarians and veterinary students from various cities in Indonesia.

Drh Amrozi, PhD as Dean of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SKHB) IPB University gave a speech and opened the activity. “I am very pleased with the organization of this workshop on koi fish. This activity will certainly increase the role of veterinarians in the field of aquatic medicine,” he said.

Prof Agustin Indrawati, Professor of SKHB IPB University and Drh Citantyaning Kirana, a veterinarian with a special interest in fish were present as seminar presenters. Agustin provided material on Basic Anatomy and Fish Behavior and Fish Health Management, while Citan delivered material on Introduction to Koi Fish Species, Koi Fish Maintenance Management, and Koi Fish Physical Examination.

The seminar was accompanied by a tour to the 16th KOI’s Expo at Innovation Convention Center Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (ICC BRIN) Cibinong. The tour was guided by Slamet, Chairman of Koi Owner Indonesia Society. “The participants were given the opportunity to practice handling, restraint, and physical examination of fish. The practice was conducted at one of the koi fish farms and importers located in the Sentul area, Solaris Koi Farm,” said Drh Citan.

Keko, a koi pond consultant and designer with considerable experience, was also present and provided knowledge on the pond criteria needed to support the health of koi fish. “We cannot nurture fish, but water can nurture fish, because the quality of water will determine the health of fish,” he added.
