The guest lecture was organized as part of the Bioethics and Laboratory Animals course for postgraduate students of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences. The guest lecture was moderated by Drh Fitriya Nur Annisa Dewi, as the course coordinator. Prof De Mori talked about the concept of ethics in the field of conservation and various efforts to implement it.

Prof De Mori invited the lecture participants to explore the understanding of ethical boundaries in conservation activities, various perspectives on goals and reasons for conservation efforts, challenges in approaching human-wildlife conflict cases, and the importance of compassion in every determination of conservation strategies.

He explained the importance and principles of ethical self-assessment and how it differs in substance from the process of obtaining ethical clearance.

“Examples of efforts to apply the 3Rs principle (Replace, Reduce, Refine) in studies involving wildlife is a concept that is well known in the world of laboratory animals but has its own challenges in the world of conservation,” explained Prof De Mori.

The presence of Prof Barbara De Mori is also part of the Visiting Professor activities supported by the Directorate of Global Connectivity of IPB University. Currently, Prof De Mori also acts as an ethical expert for the Assisted Reproductive Technology and Biobank SKHB IPB University team in an effort to preserve the Sumatran Rhino in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, Germany.

In addition, UNIPD and IPB University have also initiated the establishment of official cooperation. This effort is expected to continue to open opportunities for various collaborative activities between IPB and UNIPD, especially between veterinary schools at the two universities. (*/Lp) (IAAS/PRP)
