IPB University Professor Presents Indonesia’s Fisheries Management Strategy at the Global Fisheries Congress

Professor of IPB University, Prof Indra Jaya, recently attended the 9th World Fisheries Congress (WFC) in Seattle, United States recently. The WFC is a grand global meeting held every four years, bringing together various stakeholders in the fisheries sector organised by the World Fisheries Council.

In this WFC, participants from all over the world gather to share their ideas and perspectives on the latest research, actual issues that are developing, the latest scientific breakthroughs, as well as aspects of governance related to science, industry, conservation and sustainable fisheries management.

Prof Indra Jaya who is one of the lecturers of the Department of Marine Science and Technology, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK), IPB University was present as one of the presenters at WFC 2024. His presentation was entitled “Addressing the Climate Change Impacts on Shifting Stocks: Indonesian Fisheries Management Strategies”.

“There is an urgent need to design effective fishing strategies when fish stocks are low as a result of climate change phenomena. Climate change scenarios and vulnerability assessments are incorporated into fisheries profiles in an effort to improve fisheries management in Indonesia,” said Prof Indra.

In addition to presenting, Prof Indra was also given the honour of being a panellist at the prestigious congress in the discussion session “Managing fisheries in a world of shifting stocks: integrating biological, policy, behavioural, social and economic aspects”.

“This congress is a very important knowledge exchange event, connecting scientists, industry practitioners, policy makers and various other related parties. Through intense discussion and collaboration, participants can stimulate the development of understanding in various fields relevant to fisheries,” said Prof Indra.

According to him, at this congress participants can share the latest findings in fisheries research, identify key issues that need to be addressed, and find innovative solutions that can push the fisheries industry towards better sustainability.

“The congress is also a platform for participants to better understand the challenges and opportunities faced in fisheries management in different countries and regions. By focusing on effective and sustainable governance, the WFC is a platform for stakeholders to build networks, forge partnerships and formulate concrete steps towards more sustainable and resilient fisheries,” said Prof Indra.

The 9th World Fisheries Congress is a very important platform in order to support the development of more sustainable fisheries science, industry and policies around the world.
