IPB University officials consisting of the Director, Chief of Office, Chief of Bureau, Chief of Agency, Vice Chief of Institution, Vice Dean, Chief of Unit and a number of Assistant Directors in the environment of IPB University received insight into public speaking from one of the famous celebrities, Shahnaz Haque. The event entitled Public Speaking Training with Shahnaz Haque was held at the IPB International Convention Centre (IICC), Monday (29/4).

Rector of IPB University, Prof Arif Satria in his speech said, the material presented in this event was a provision for lecturers when becoming a speaker from various circles. He conveyed a parable by saying keep sawing, but do not forget to sharpen.

Furthermore, the Rector revealed his experience of having to first understand the character of the audience. In one event, he suddenly had to change the material because the audience was different from what he expected.

“Understanding public speaking means understanding the audience. I want the lecturers, innovators of IPB University to be able to do effective communication to be efficient. I hope that all researchers are able to present in three minutes. Therefore, effective communication is needed,” he said.

Prof Arif also conveyed the importance of communication skills. The provision of these abilities is important so that the message conveyed can be captured the same as the other person as the recipient of the message.

“In communication there is physiological noise which means there is a deviation of meaning, it can be due to psychological factors, such as being sick, for example. Because of psychological noise, the prejudice of what is conveyed does not arrive. Or there is semantic noise, the same word but has a different meaning,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Shahnaz Haque in her material conveyed the philosophy of the door leaf. “Push ourselves into the mind of the other person. You have to know the contents of his head. It could be that our interlocutor is someone who did not go to high school but has extraordinary experience,” she said.

“The weakness of smart people is that they always use difficult jargon. Let’s try to lower the standard according to the listener, adjust the sentence. You can use analogies, according to the actions and ways of thinking of the interlocutor or audience,” added Shahnaz.
