IPB University Students and NIT Wakayama Students Learn Mangrove Rehabilitation in Thousand Islands
The Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK) of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) of IPB University and the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Wakayama, Japan had the opportunity to learn together about mangrove rehabilitation on Pramuka Island, Thousand Islands National Park, Jakarta on 20/3.
This activity is part of an international collaboration between IPB University and NIT Wakayama. This activity is part of the “Global Internship for NITW Students at IPB University”
Thousand Islands is a natural laboratory island of IPB University that has been used since long ago. “We already consider this area as part of IPB. University. Many educational, research and community service activities are also carried out in this area, even this place is like our own village,” said Dr Beginner Subhan, IPB University’s Molecular Ecology Expert.
Meanwhile, Dondy Arafat who is a Lecturer of ITK IPB University explained that mangrove introduction activities were carried out in the mangrove park in the Thousand Islands National Park.
“For the introduction of mangrove rehabilitation, we invite our partner, Smiling Coral Indonesia. On this occasion the participants were introduced to the nursery method and the spaced clump method which is a mangrove rehabilitation method developed for small islands,” said this IPB University Marine Ecology Expert.
“Now we come to Seribu Island and are learning about mangrove planting activities. This is a great opportunity for students to learn various nature conservation activities,” said the accompanying faculty from NITW, Dr Yuichi Akasaki, Professor of History and Humanities.
Mangrove ecosystem is one of the tropical ecosystems that can be found on the islands in the Thousand Islands. Currently, many mangrove rehabilitation activities are carried out by IPB University. In addition, mangrove rehabilitation activities are also carried out by various parties such as the government, the community and the private sector.
