Fasting is an important moment for Muslims every year. However, some people are often faced with health problems while fasting. IPB University nutritionist Prof Hardinsyah offers some tips to reduce the risk of health problems while fasting. What are they? Here is his explanation:

Pay attention to the food you consume
If you think that eating fried foods when breaking the fast is unhealthy, the answer is not right. What makes it unhealthy is when consumed in excess.

In order to create a healthy fast, Prof Hardinsyah said, it is necessary to pay attention to the nutritional composition when combining foods. If you want to eat fried foods, you must pay attention to other nutritional needs, such as protein and carbohydrates.

“Eating food can be said to be healthy if in a menu dish can meet nutritional needs and has a safe combination,” explained this professor of the Faculty of Human Ecology (Fema) IPB University.

When fasting, he suggests eating less foods with extreme flavors, such as foods that are too spicy. Also make sure to drink at least two glasses of mineral water during suhoor.

In addition to composition, it is necessary to pay attention to substances that can cause the risk of illness, such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness and indigestion. Examples can occur in unhygienic packaging factors.

Exercise intensity
The intensity of exercise during fasting also needs to be adjusted. For the time being, choose exercises that do not produce a lot of sweat or that risk making you thirsty and weak. It would be nice to choose an indoor exercise venue and reduce exercise that is directly exposed to the sun.

Set a sleep pattern
A good sleep pattern is generally 7 to 8 hours. When you are fasting, you will have less time to sleep at night because it is cut off by suhoor time.

There are often many mistakes that are made after eating Suhoor, such as sleeping in the morning. Sleeping after Suhoor is not recommended both health-wise and religiously.

Tips to fulfill the lack of sleep while fasting is to sleep during the day. Religiously, the time between 1pm and 3pm is good for sleeping because it is the peak of fatigue.

“The benefit of daytime sleep is to compensate for 2 to 4 times the night sleep. Therefore, napping for just a few minutes can fulfill a good sleep pattern,” said Prof Hardinsyah.

In addition to the three healthy fasting tips above, there is one thing that needs to be emphasized to reduce the risk of health problems during fasting. “Avoid everything that is excessive, be it food, exercise, or sleep patterns,” he said. (Fahriza/Rz) (IAAS/ZQA)
