Department of ITK IPB University Organises Marine Lake Sharing Session with Students from the Netherlands
Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK), IPB University held a sharing session with students from Wageningen University and Research. The invited students were Stephanie Martinez, doctoral student and Judith Breedveld, master student from Wageningen University and Research. The topic discussed was “Marine Lakes as Natural Laboratories for Evolution and Reef Degradation.”
Previously, Stephanie Martinez and Judith Breedveld were involved in research collaboration with IPB University lecturers, Dr Beginer Subhan and Dea Fauzia Lestari, SIK, M.Si. The research was conducted in the marine lakes of Misool, Raja Ampat.
On this occasion, Stephanie explained that the focus of the research conducted was a study related to invertebrates and vertebrates in marine lakes. In addition, Stephanie also displayed the results of her 3D modelling of coral reefs. They also shared their experiences when preparing and collecting data in marine lakes.
Chairman of the Department of ITK, FPIK IPB University, Dr Syamsul Bahri Agus said, sharing activities like this are expected to increase international exposure to students. Not only that, he also hopes that similar activities can provide motivation to continue their studies in the marine field while strengthening research collaboration with foreign university partners.
“Marine lake is one of the collaborative researches between IPB University with Wageningen University and Research (WUR) and Naturalis Biodiversity Centre of the Netherlands conducted in Misool, Raja Ampat. This research involved several undergraduate, master and doctoral students from both IPB University and WUR,” said Dr Syamsul Bahri, a lecturer at IPB University.
The sharing session continued with sharing experiences related to fieldwork. In addition, the assistant team also provided an overview of the Marine Morphogenetics course and how it relates to research activities in marine lakes. (IAAS/RUM)
