Aquatic animals have a crucial role in human daily life. These animals provide essential resources such as food, medicines, and raw materials. Life underwater significantly impacts human civilization, yet the study of this border protection is largely overlooked by the international community.

Therefore, two units at IPB University, namely the Directorate of Global Connectivity and the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SKHB), along with the Global Health Agromaritime and One Health Collaborating Center (GHAOHCC), collaborated to conduct a series of activities to raise awareness in the field of aquatic medicine. This event is part of the collaboration between IPB University and Michigan State University (MSU), USA, under the AsiaHub consortium.

Bartolomeo Gorgoglione, an internationally recognized scientist dedicated to the field of fish pathobiology and immunology, held discussions with all academic stakeholders, including students and professors. Bartolomeo, who has served as president of the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association (WAVMA), explained the benefits of establishing a WAVMA Student Chapter at IPB University and future education opportunities as WAVMA members.

Bartolomeo also delivered a public lecture to students and faculty on international career opportunities in fish pathogen research. He concluded his session by discussing research programs in aquatic veterinary medicine available to veterinary students seeking further experience in aquatic medicine.

“This discussion aligns perfectly with our field of interest, which is aquatic animals. This is an incredible opportunity for members of the Pet and Exotic Aquatic Animal Professional Association (HKSA) to discuss aquatic medicine with an expert. Through this discussion, we feel that our insights and relationships regarding aquatic medicine, which are currently limited in Indonesia, are expanding,” said HKSA Chairperson Athaya Sekar Ramadhani on 12/2.

This visit is a follow-up to various collaborative activities between IPB University and MSU’s AsiaHub. This collaboration will strengthen the joint commitment to advancing partnerships across Asia and the world to address global challenges, especially in food, agriculture, education, human resource capacity building, health and nutrition, environment, water, and energy.
