The Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK) of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) of IPB University welcomed the arrival of SMAIT Al Kahfi Bogor students to join the student internship programme. Four students had the opportunity to take part in internship activities at the Marine Microbiology Laboratory, ITK Department on 2-12/1.

This internship programme aims to equip students with an in-depth understanding of the marine world and experience interacting directly with the professional world, so that they can better know themselves and their potential.

The students not only received a basic introduction to marine microbiology, but also learnt about the use of laboratory equipment, identifying marine invertebrate samples in the laboratory, understanding the concept of Occupational Safety and Health (OHS), as well as being involved in DNA Barcoding research practices.

“There is a lot of fun in this internship, it is really useful, we can directly apply the theories we have learnt at school,” said Achmad Mirazha Imtiyaz, one of the interns.

Dr Meutia, lecturer and Chief of the Marine Microbiology Laboratory of the ITK Department gave further explanation about the laboratory and introduced the equipment and facilities available to the interns.

“We are happy to be involved in developing the knowledge and skills of SMAIT Al Kahfi students, especially in the marine world. Hopefully this internship can be a valuable experience for SMAIT Al Kahfi students,” said Dr Meutia.

At the same time, Kartika, one of SMAIT Al Kahfi’s teachers, also expressed interest in working together to develop a Research School programme for students, as a follow-up to the internship at the Department of Marine Science and Technology.

“This activity is expected to accommodate the Merdeka Belajar programme more intensively, as well as a forum for promoting the spread of knowledge, as well as the forerunner of strengthening Citizen Science, in the development of marine science and technology, especially in Indonesia,” she said.

The activity was held for 10 days and the internship students were guided by expert lecturers from the ITK Department including Dr Meutia Samira Ismet, Endang S.
