IPB University Lecturer Offers Two Alternative Livelihood Solutions for Fishermen in Jogosimo Village, Kebumen
IPB University lecturers from the Department of Fisheries Resource Utilization (PSP), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) implemented the Lecturer Serving Innovation (DMI) program in Jogosimo Village, Klirong District, Kebumen Regency, Central Java.
The Lecturer Team Serving Innovation consists of Prof Tri Wiji Nurani, Dr M Dahri Iskandar, Dr Iin Solihin, Dr Ronny Irawan Wahju and Dr Didin Komarudin. The activity was entitled ‘Empowering Kebumen Regency Fishermen through Socialization and Internalization of Alternative Livelihoods’.
“This socialization is not only about conveying innovation but also in order to map the issues/problems faced by the community, especially fishermen in Jogosimo Village. It is hoped that the results of this mapping will become material for planning future activities in a sustainable manner,” said Prof Tri Wiji Nurani as leader of the DMI team.
From this meeting it was revealed that most of the fishermen were fringe fishermen who used 1 GT boats. Usually, if the waves are high, fishermen will ‘hang out’ first, then carry out fishing activities.
Responding to this, Prof Tri offered an alternative livelihood solution by using river estuaries as land for cultivating crabs and shrimp. On the other hand, developing river tourism can be an alternative livelihood for fishermen.
Didin Komarudin MSi stated that the development of river tourism in Jogosimo Village is more focused on educational tourism. Educational tourism will be integrated with culinary tourism so that it can improve the welfare of Jogosimo Village. Apart from that, local youth empowerment can be done to develop this educational tourism.
One of the IPB University lecturers, Mokhamad Dahri Iskandar, MSi, gave material about catching mangrove crabs as an alternative economic activity for the community and efforts to grow them.
The Lukulo River which crosses Jogosimo Village is considered a potential solution for growing mangrove crabs in mangrove areas. He also explained crab rearing methods, including the crab apartment method which is considered efficient in terms of land use and controlling the growth of mangrove crabs.
Dr Ronni Irawan Wahju added that another method implemented in crab rearing is enlargement using large bottles or gallons. The gallon is cut then the funnel is turned upside down and placed in the mangrove area. This method is implemented in the Pangandaran area.
Previously, FPIK IPB University and the Kebumen Regency Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) had signed a cooperation agreement (PKS). Jogosimo Village is one of the loci for becoming a fostered village, which is expected to become a model for advanced fishing villages.
The Head of Jogosimo Village, H Muhammad Muntasimudin, SPd, welcomed the presence and ideas of IPB University for the development of Jogosimo Village. He also expressed his appreciation for the concept of empowerment that had been put forward by IPB University lecturers. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RZL)
