A team of IPB University lecturers from the Department of Fisheries Resource Utilisation (PSP), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) carried out the Lecturer Mengabdi Innovation programme at the Logending Coastal Fishing Port (PPP), Ayah District, Kebumen, Central Java (7/12).

The programme was themed ‘Increasing Awareness of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) at PPP Logending’. There were 30 participants, consisting of 17 staff members of PPP Logending, 5 representatives of the Fishermen’s Association (Rukun Nelayan), 5 representatives of SAR and one representative each from the Indonesian Fishermen’s Association (HNSI), TPI Logending and representatives of the shrimp processing industry in the PPP Logending area.

The programme was packaged in the form of technical guidance (bimtek) in the form of theory and practice related to K3. The materials included fire extinguishing, understanding OHS in the fishing port environment and the practice of filling out Job Safety Analysis (JSA) forms. Pretest and posttest were also held to determine the increase in awareness before and after attending the technical guidance.

“This programme is aimed at making the actors in the PPP Logending area really work with OHS aspects in mind, starting from their homes,” said Dr Budhi Hascaryo Iskandar as team leader.

IPB University lecturer from the Department of PSP, Dr Yopi Novita, said that hazard identification and risk assessment at locations in the PPP Logending area need to be examined as material in the preparation of standard operating procedures (POB) K3 activities in this area are guaranteed.

“The use of life jackets for fishermen and workers who work at the port docks is mandatory in order to minimise work accidents,” she explained.

On the same occasion, Zuni from the Chief of the Kebumen Pamong Praja Police Unit (Kasatpol PP) and the Gombong Post Fire Fighting Team conveyed the theory and practice of fire fighting in the field and the safety of gas stoves.

“There is a need for light fire extinguishers (APAR) in several locations in the PPP Logending area. This is an initial handling in the event of a fire before the firefighting team arrives,” he explained.

The discussion, which was conducted in a relaxed manner, led participants to ask many questions related to fires, especially those caused by LPG gas in homes. One of the participants, Gilang, expressed his gratitude for being given an understanding of the OHS aspects at PPP Logending.

“Through the fire-fighting simulation, I can try to use fire extinguishers and gunny sacks to put out fires,” said Gilang.

Encouraging results from the participants’ pretest and posttest showed an increase in understanding of the material provided by an average of 80 per cent.

“This activity is very useful in opening up insights related to understanding K3 at PPP Logending. The use of fire extinguishers is not only theoretical but also practical,” said Ariyanto, one of the managers of PPP Logending.

“Hopefully, this activity will be useful for the perpetrators of activities at PPP Logending and can minimise work accidents,” he said, representing the Head of PPP Logending Management, Ir Djati Pramono, when closing the event. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
