Three student teams from IPB University won the title of champion in the GreenHack Challenge, Biodiversity & Ecotourism App Hackathon 2023. The competition with the theme “Hack the Biodiversity: Elevating Indonesia Ecotourism through Technology” is a student-level competition at universities both within and outside the country in the form of developing applications based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with ESRI technology.

This online competition is part of the Merdeka Campus Competition Programme (PKKM) organised by the Department of Forest Resource Conservation and Ecotourism, Faculty of Forestry and Environment, IPB University.

The first team, with the project name The SIMS (Sustainable Identification Management System), won second place with a digital reporting application designed for the protection of forest areas in the context of conservation partnerships. The second team, carrying a project called Suggests, won third place. Suggests is designed to be able to help provide direct information on problems that occur in tourism areas.

Meanwhile, the third team, carrying a project called GRoute, became the second runner-up. The project aims to map green lanes in urban areas while providing education related to the introduction of tree species found on green lanes.

Canserina Kurnia, one of the judges from Esri Global Inc, said, “All the works presented were very good. I think the creativity and innovation shows the students’ concern for the environment and related issues. All the problems raised can be solved with GIS.

These three teams are not only proud of the institution, but also confirm that IPB University has great potential in producing young innovators who are able to make a positive contribution in overcoming global environmental challenges.

IPB University and DKSHE are committed to continuing to support and encourage student participation in international level competitions by prioritising creativity and innovation. The success of these three student teams is clear evidence that IPB University is not only a place of superior education, but also a place where future generations who care about global environmental issues are born.
