Faculty of Medicine of IPB University Holds One Health Workshop, Presenting Professor of Minnesota University, United States of America

The Faculty of Medicine of IPB University held a One Health workshop which presented Prof Shailendra Prasad, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Minnesota University, United States, (3/11). The workshop raised the topic “One Health Implementation in Medical Education, Research, and Community Engagement at IPB University”.

The concept of One Health, as presented by Prof Shailendra, is an integrated approach that aims to achieve a balance of sustainability and optimize the health of humans, animals, and ecosystems. The implementation of One Health requires collaboration from various disciplines.

The Acting Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of IPB University, Prof Srihadi Agung Priyono revealed that he felt called to implement One Health, especially in the field of education. He said, through education, he wanted to provide sufficient provision to students, lecturers, and doctors in teaching hospitals in understanding the concept of One Health to be more comprehensive in overcoming health problems.

“In general, the Faculty of Medicine of IPB University was established with one of its specialties, namely wanting one health (One Health). Previously we also had various faculties with expertise in the environment, animal health, human ecology, and so on. If all of them can unite, it will have a health impact on the wider community,” he said.

Prof Srihadi said, this One Health workshop followed up one of the mandates of the Rector of IPB University to the Faculty of Medicine. He said, the rector mandated that the Faculty of Medicine could provide broader One Health education to medical students and IPB University students in other faculties. Therefore, he organized a One Health workshop by presenting the resource person Prof Shailendra Prasad.

“Prof Shailendra is one of the professors at the Faculty of Medicine at Minnesota University who is an expert in One Health. So we communicated with him and thank God for the opportunity to come here to provide how to package our education with additional One Health competencies,” he said.

He said the One Health workshop was not only attended by lecturers of the Faculty of Medicine of IPB University, but also several lecturers of other faculties. He wanted other faculties at IPB University to know the importance of the One Health concept in order to help each other realize the health system.

“The hope is of course that our lecturers can get inspiration on how to develop the concept of One Health in our education. This knowledge is important for lecturers in packaging One Health in their respective specialist fields,” said Prof Srihadi. (MHT) (IAAS/SHY)
