The Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) IPB University successfully held an international conference themed ‘Innovative Marine Science and Technology Solutions for Ocean Health, Resilience, and Global Climate Change’.

This year, The 5th International Conference on Marine Science (ICMS) was held in conjunction with The 4th International Conference on Tropical Biology (ICTB) in collaboration with the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Tropical Biology (SEAMEO BIOTROP) in Tajur, Bogor City.

The 4th ICTB conference was attended by more than 152 participants. The event brought together scientists, practitioners, and policymakers to share their latest research and insights. Topics included ocean health and marine eco-biology; biodiversity and environment biomonitoring; climate change oceanography; marine remote sensing and GIS; and acoustic, instrumentation, and underwater robotics.

Dean of FPIK IPB University, Prof Fredinan Yulianda, said in his opening remarks that the organization of this ICMS is an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to overcome the great challenges facing our oceans.

“The challenges we face, from climate change to pollution and habitat degradation, are immense, requiring urgent and innovative responses. Through collaboration, research and the application of advanced technologies, we can meet these challenges,” says Prof. Fredinan.

Dr Yuli Naulita, the chief organizer of The 5th ICMS, enthusiastically revealed that more than 70 abstracts have been registered. The number represents eight countries, including Indonesia, Bangladesh, China, Philippines, Turkey, Japan, France, and Malaysia. All of them are united by a common vision, which is to address the urgent challenges facing our oceans.

“The organization of ICMS is in line with the urgent need to protect our oceans. The insights and innovations presented by oral presenters will embrace diverse perspectives so as to inspire innovative research in the future,” said Dr Yuli.

The Banggai Upwelling Dynamic and Ecosystem Experiment (BUDEE) research team participated in sharing insights and findings from recent research. Through this research, the team also contributed to finding innovative solutions for ocean health and climate resilience.

“This conference will provide new insights and collaborations that will help us build a more sustainable future for our ocean,” said Dr. Syamsul, Chair of the ITK Department at IPB University. (RAT/Rz) (IAAS/MZS)
