Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan) IPB University and FIELD Indonesia again gave appreciation to a number of institutions in the region in the framework of Indonesia’s clean air program. Awards were also given to parties who were considered successful in controlling forest and land fires (karhutla).

This time, the awards were given to a number of parties in the Kalimantan region. The appreciation was given directly by the Dean of Fahutan IPB University, Prof Naresworo Nugroho, and the Director of the Regional Forest Fire Management Resource Center-Southeast Asia (RFMRC-SEA), Prof Bambang Hero Saharjo at the Golden Tulip Suites Hotel, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan some time ago.

The clean air award for the Kalimantan provincial level for the Manggala Agni/Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) group was given to Rido Eltrico Putro from Manggala Agni Daops Kalimantan XII/Paser.

Appreciation was also given to Ya’ Suharnoto, ST, MT as Commander of the Forest and Land Fire Control Brigade (Dalkarhutla) Forest Security Officer of the Technical Implementation Unit of the Forest Management Unit (Pamhut UPT KPH) Kubu Raya Region. Also Rahmat Rahmawan from Manggala Agni Daops Kalimantan III/Pangkalan Bun.

For the farmer/individual/MPA category, the award was given to Yandi Candra from the Peat Fire and Mangrove Care Community (Mapagama) and Rita Dihales, SH. The last name is the Head of Teluk Bakung Village, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan Province. The forest and land fire fighting team category was given to PT Mopakha’s Brigdalkarhutla.

In addition to giving appreciation to a number of parties, Fahutan IPB University and FIELD Indonesia also participated in controlling forest and land fires through various actions. Such as monitoring hotspots and forest and land fire incidents every day in Sumatra and Kalimantan. The monitoring results were then inputted into the RFMRC-SEA website. The results of the monitoring are then also conveyed through presentations and discussions as well as going to the field.

Cooperation was also implemented by facilitating training activities for Land Preparation without Burning (PLTB) which were coordinated directly by FIELD Indonesia in areas where forest and land fires often occurred.

The chair of the activity implementation team as well as the selection team, Prof Bambang, expressed the criteria and indicators of award recipients used as the basis for assessment. The criteria include physical and mental health, high dedication, and work wholeheartedly.

In addition, the working area for at least two years (2022-2023) has yet to catch fire, as proven by satellite monitoring and facts on the ground. “Even if the area caught fire in 2022, in 2023 the number of fires that occurred was successfully reduced due to maximum efforts,” he explained.

The award recipients were also assessed for their activity in carrying out training and socialization of PLTB activities so that their work areas could be used as a reference place in efforts to control forest and land fires. In addition, the rigorous selection process was supported by Senior Behavioural Scientist, Influence at Work (UK) Limited. (*/Rz) (IAAS/SHY)
