Zenergy, IPB University Student Action to Increase Youth Involvement in Environmental Social Action
Amidst the urgency of environmental issues such as the climate crisis and waste, a group of IPB University students decided not to stay silent. Perdi, Raden, Piki, Dimas, and Achsel who are second semester students, initiated a group called Zero Generation Synergy or ‘Zenergy’.
“Zenergy has a main focus on raising environmental awareness in a participatory manner in the education domain. We realize that education is an important first step in shaping a generation that cares and is responsible for the environment,” said Raden.
On the Zenergy trip, they were not alone. The IPB University students were guided by their supervisor, Dr Rina Mardiana. They also collaborated with SMAN 1 Cisarua as a partner that has the same commitment to protecting and preserving the environment.
“This collaboration will create a strong synergy to achieve the same goal, which is to realize the role and responsibility of young people as agents of change,” she said.
The action of IPB University students was carried out through the funding event of the Student Creativity Program for Community Service (PKM-PM). However, Raden hopes that Zenergy will not stop there. Zenergy will continue to exist in accordance with its four underlying values: growth and development, synergy, inspiration, and impact.
“Zenergy is proof that the younger generation can initiate change to achieve greater goals. We are committed to continuing to grow and develop in carrying out our actions. Continue to learn and innovate in every process to achieve better results,” she said.
Perdian, the other team members also realized the importance of cooperation and collaboration. “Like a broomstick, it can’t sweep if there are only five or a few sticks. On the other hand, a broomstick works when there are many of them together. They are stronger at facing challenges and achieving bigger goals,” he said.
In addition, Perdian continued, Zenergy wants to be a role model for others to participate in solving socio-environmental problems. They try to inspire others to get involved and take action.
“Zenergy doesn’t just talk the talk. We want real action that has a real impact too, by creating positive changes in the environment and surrounding communities,” he said.
In a meeting session with the leadership of SMAN 1 Cisarua, Dr Rina Mardiana said, “In this Zenergy, we try to set an example through real action, so that others are moved to intervene to solve this very urgent social-environmental problem.” (*/Rz) (IAAS/MZS)
