Synergy between IPB University and UNU Yogyakarta to introduce portable FADs to fishermen
The Farmers and Fishermen Center (TNC) IPB University together with Nahdlatul Ulama University (UNU) Yogyakarta successfully held Socialization and Fishing Practice activities using Portable FADs for the fishing community in Bugel Village, Kulonprogo Regency, Yogyakarta (17/10).
Vice Chair of TNC IPB University and lecturer at the Department of Aquatic Resource Management (PSP), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) IPB University, Dr Roza Yusfiandayani said that the synergy with UNU Yogyakarta in the Kosa Bangsa program was carried out as a form of community service, especially fishermen. IPB University plays the role of companion, while UNU Yogyakarta is the implementer.
The socialization and practice of portable FADs was attended by 20 fishermen together with activists from the Indonesian Farmers Movement from Yogyakarta and Magelang. Dr Roza said that the fishermen were very enthusiastic about this activity. He hopes that fishermen in Bugel Village can use portable FADs as fishing aids so that their productivity can increase.
“I am very happy to be given the opportunity to discuss and be able to provide knowledge and technology transfer and be able to provide community service for fishermen in Bugel Village. “We hope that this activity can help fishermen in solving the problems that are currently occurring,” he said.
Dr Roza, who is also the chairman of the accompanying team, explained that Portable FADs have been widely used and have given good results in several areas ranging from Aceh, Belitung, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Kalimantan to Ambon.
“Portable FADs are an innovation from conventional FADs which aims to make fishing easier and increase catches. “We hope that this innovation can also have a good effect and influence on catches in Bugel waters,” said Dr Roza.
Aris Kusumo Diantoro, SE MBA as the chair executive of UNU Yogyakarta said that the fishermen were guided directly regarding what portable FADs are and the practice of using them. Not only that, the fishermen also received assistance from 8 portable FAD units.
“Hopefully the Kosa Bangsa program synergy between IPB University and UNU Yogyakarta can increase productivity and provide broad benefits for fishermen in Bugel Village,” he said. (MRR/Rz) (IAAS/YMK)
