The rapid development of e-commerce in Indonesia has a positive impact on innovation in digital marketing. One of the trends that is being talked about and become the main focus in the world of digital marketing is affiliate strategy.

Through the Student Creativity Programme for Social and Humanities Research (PKM-RSH), a group of IPB University students examined the impact of affiliate strategies in creating decent jobs as an effort to reduce unemployment in Indonesia.

Affiliate marketing, as a commission-based marketing programme, provides an indirect link between potential buyers and products through special referral links. Claimed to be a key element in the country’s e-commerce competition, the programme takes centre stage in illustrating the rapidly evolving market dynamics.

Arlan, PKM-RSH team leader, said that this topic is interesting to research. The reason is that the digital society can now utilise this e-commerce affiliation model to earn additional income with just a mobile phone and quota.

“My team and I thought, can this trend of e-commerce affiliate marketers be a solution to unemployment in the future? It seems like it can, it just needs the right regulation,” he said.

Arlan was assisted by teammates Monica Aulia, Dwi Muharni and Nurfatimah. The four IPB University students were also mentored by Dr Anggraini Sukmawati, a lecturer at the School of Business.

This research received a good response. The reviewers and IPB University lecturers also gave a positive impression and enthusiasm for this research topic.

Involving 25 respondents and 3 key persons, this research used the framework of 11 decent work indicators issued by the International Labor Organization. As a result, there are several decent work indicators that need to be fulfilled by affiliate marketers.

“There are still indicators that have not been fulfilled. Then in terms of income there are also no significant results. However, from the results of the interviews, there is an opportunity for this affiliate to become a decent job and be given protection,” added Rani, one of the team members.

She hopes that this research can be completed soon, so that the results can be published as a scientific journal and can add new insights and policies for affiliate marketers. (*/Rz) (IAAS/RUM)
