The Youth Carbon Guardians team led by IPB University students successfully got a medal at the Student Innovation Competition in Climate, Energy, and Sustainability (Siclus) 2023. The team consisting of Nanditha Setyaningrum, Rahmat King Abd. Azis Zainuddin, and Siti Aisyah Puan Maharani won a silver medal in the scientific paper category.

Siclus is a competition organized by Society Renewable Energy Universitas Hasanuddin (SRE Unhas) for students who have interest and innovation in the fields of climate, renewable energy, environment, and technology. A total of 51 universities across Indonesia participated in this competition.

The three members of the Youth Carbon Guardians team are students of the Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan) IPB University. They carried the Net Zero Emission Innovation: Integration of Youth Carbon Action Web on IPB University Web in Raising Climate and Environmental Awareness. The idea successfully brought them to the final stage with 9 other universities.

“The innovation we offer is a platform that is directly integrated with the information unit system on the official website of IPB University. Features presented on this page include carbon footprint calculation and a mission to reduce carbon emissions. The feature is embedded to invite students to change their mindset and behavior to care about environmental sustainability and global climate problems,” Nanditha explained.

Another feature, Nanditha said, was a challenge to reduce carbon emissions from students’ daily activities within the campus, such as walking or using public facilities to lecture places, utilizing green open spaces for gathering and studying, and reducing the use of food and beverage packaging that was not environmentally friendly.

The last feature, Eco-Action Partner, aimed to serve as a connecting platform between external parties, in this case organizations, companies, and communities that provide opportunities for students to directly participate in positive activities for the environment such as cleaning rivers, planting trees, and educational facilities for students.

“With easily accessible information, this will be an opportunity for students to learn and commit directly in tackling climate change,” she added.

The Siclus event is a forum for students to be able to provide ideas and innovations to achieve Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission 2060 target. It is hoped that with this forum, youth, especially students, can participate directly and have a strong commitment in overcoming climate change problems. (*/Rz) (IAAS/SHY)
