Aquafest IPB 2023 is the largest aquaculture event organized by the Aquaculture Student Association of IPB University (HIMAKUA IPB). The event revolved around the theme ‘Explore the Future of Aquaculture’ and was held at the Sukarman Auditorium, National Library (Perpusnas), not too long ago.

Fina Oktaviana Tanjung, the Chairperson Organizer of Aquafest, stated that the theme for Aquafest IPB 2023 was inspired by the concerns of Generation Z about the future of aquaculture.

“Generation Z views aquaculture as one of the crucial sectors ensuring food security and economic stability in the future. With that in mind, Aquafest aims to provide a platform for young individuals, especially those concerned about aquaculture, to collectively address future challenges,” expressed Fina.

Prof Ferdinan Yulianda, the Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) at IPB University, explained that Aquafest is a recurring event that has gained global recognition.

“Every year, the event has its very own distinctive characteristics as well as different themes. One of the main focuses in the fisheries sector is cultivation. Students play a significant role in embracing the national fisheries cultivation developments,” he said.

He believes that students have the potential to be agents of change in enhancing the production and sustainability of the fisheries sector in Indonesia.

Rudi Alex Wahyudin, Secretary of the Research and Human Resources Agency for Marine Affairs and Fisheries (BRSDM KKP), provided further insights into the strategic role of cultivation in driving the economy.

“The significant challenge facing cultivation in the future is its adaptability to existing changes. Competence becomes crucial for the advancement of fisheries development,” he stated.

Additionally, Rudi also outlined five main commodities in the field of fisheries cultivation, namely shrimp, crab, lobster, tilapia, and seaweed.

“The Ministry is trying to set the best example through modelling programs, such as the development modelling of shrimp in Kebumen, which can serve as a learning ground for students,” Rudi explained.

Rudi further mentioned that human resource development programs are a focus of KKP. He explained that KKP is committed to providing free education, training for the general public, mentoring, and competence support through counselling. (Lp) (IAAS/ZRT)
