Students from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (SIL) at IPB University had the opportunity to participate in Building Information Modeling (BIM) training organized by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) and the Construction Services Agency for Region III in Jakarta.

According to Dr Erizal, the Chairperson of the SIL Department at IPB University, every construction worker is now required to have a competency certificate, as mandated by Law No. 2 of 2017 on Construction Services. Both service providers and users in the public construction sector are obliged to employ certified construction workers.

“Therefore, this BIM training is provided for prospective construction workers among graduates and future graduates of SIL IPB University. The training program commenced on August 26, 2023,” he explained.

He further stated that the objective of this training is to introduce and deepen the concept and applications of BIM in the construction industry to young individuals pursuing knowledge in the field of civil engineering. The training was attended by 30 students and led by instructors Muhammad Fauzan ST, MT, and Sekar Mentari ST, MT, both of whom are certified instructors and experts in Tekla from the SIL Department at IPB University.

“Through this program, students can understand how BIM can be used to enhance efficiency and accuracy in the planning, design, and execution of construction projects. Additionally, this training provides students with the opportunity to interact with industry practitioners and develop relevant skills to meet future demands in the field of civil and environmental engineering,” he added.

The program began with an introduction to BIM in construction, its applications in the workplace, BIM workflows, examples of outcomes, and live demonstrations of the use of Tekla Structures software. Tekla Structures is integrated with various other applications such as CAD, Revit, and Sketchup, making it easy to operate for design purposes.

Participants in the training were also introduced to geodetic equipment produced by Trimble, specifically the Trimble SX10. The Trimble SX10 is a versatile geodetic measurement instrument that combines 3D laser scanning capabilities with total station mapping technology. It is suitable for professionals in surveying, construction, and mapping who require a versatile tool. This instrument can be relied upon for various mapping and modeling needs.

“With this BIM training, SIL IPB University students will have a deeper understanding of cutting-edge technology in the construction industry. Consequently, this is a positive step towards supporting the development of the construction sector in Indonesia and preparing the younger generation to become future leaders in this field,” concluded Dr Erliza.
